"Unser Hausboot"
by Peter Hörst

An experience of a lifetime
by Jodie Bonaz

I hired this gorgeous houseboat for a month in summer and it was nothing short of amazing. The boat is surprisingly spacious in all regards with the exception of the bathroom. I had my adult daughter accompany me on the trip and so the owners bought a new lounge that folded out into a bed and so it was the perfect solution turning the otherwise one bedroom boat into an option that now can extend to four people potentially staying. My bedroom was in the bow of the boat and had a real cubby house feel to it which I found enchanting. With a fully functioning kitchen, we were able to balance between eating out at the local restaurants and cooking for ourselves with ingredients we bought from the markets that are held every Saturday shortly around the corner. When we couldnt work out how to use the appliances, as their is wi-fi on the boat, we found you tube how to videos which solved our problems. The boat is in a beautiful suburb and everyday I found myself strolling the neighbourhood admiring the beautiful window displays that people place in their windows. A bike rental store is very close as is a grocery store and laundramat should you require them. Everything you could possibly want whether it be a bulldog coffee store, a flower vendor, a hot dog stand, the world's best apple pie, an ATM, a Chinese massage, a yoga studio - it was all only five minutes away. Living on the canal includes watching the boats as they go past which is wonderfully entertaining. You see the young men out for some fun, boys wooing their girls, tourists and sightseers seeing the city from the water and at the same time - they see you and for a moment, you can wave and pretend that you live here and this is your everyday life. While the canal is still, the bigger boats create a wake which causes the boat to move slightly otherwise the boat is stationary. The floor does creak terribly which is only a problem if you're trying to tip-toe around while your daughter is still sleeping. Also, as the boat is positioned at a turning point on the canal, you do hear other boats putting their engines into reverse as they manoeuvre their large vessels around the corner. This happens at all hours of the night and while it wasnt a problem, it does occur. You can easily control the temperature within the boat as it has its own heating/cooling system. We found the whether was often raining or overcast in the morning but by 4pm the sun is shining and you are wishing you hadnt worn a jacket. In summer, the sun doesnt go down to 11pm so you can fit two days into one! My trip was truly incredible and I honestly could not recommend this houseboat enough. Thank you to the staff who patiently answered all my questions in the lead up to my trip.
