Captains Place | 31 December 2009
The Clement Family

We have just spent a lovely Xmas on board "Captains Place". Our host was so kind and helpful. He also brought us a beautiful bunch of red tulips - and - had taken the trouble to put a decorated Xmas tree in the dining room for us. Thank you Eugene - above and beyond the call of duty and very much appreciated!! There was only one fault and it was ours : We didn't book for a long enough stay - so - we will have to return!!

A GREAT Stay | 17 December 2009
David Jones

Don't be afraid and book the Captain's Place (BO20) today. Everything you read in the description is true. It's a splendid houseboat with plenty of space. I can only imagine what staying there in the summer is like. Still, Eugene, our host, was fantastic and helped us with so many things. This is the way to go if you're staying in Amsterdam--you won't be disappointed. A very professionally-run outfit. Thanks!

Relaxing Break | 21 September 2009
Kirstin McLaughlin

Having not long retuned home from a fantastic break in Amsterdam (for the 2nd time) I feel it is important to highlight the reason why this trip was more enjoyable than my first and I feel this is mostly to do with this unique accomodation choice. Ive always wanted to stay on a houseboat and I can honestly say this boat surpassed my expectations. It was huge, light and airy. Had all necessary appliances and an abuandance of plates, glasses and culterly. The boat itself was very clean with some fantastic little touches (I dont want to give them away but the roofed area at night is fantastic). Eugine was friendly and on hand should you need anything. There was very little movement of the boat but if you are very sensitive to motion sickness I would advise you bring some anti sickness tablets. I am quite sensitive and on our 3rd day of 5 I began to notice the movement. However, it wasnt too bad and wouldn't stop me from staying in this houseboat again. Transport links to central station are really good and there is a shopping centre nearby. All in all staying in this houseboat made for a relaxing and throughly enjoyable holiday for me, my partner and my parents.

One of my best holidays ever. And I have been in the city 2 times before.
The boat is a dream and the hosts were cool. Looking forward to the next trip.

Perfect! | 1 August 2009
john keeble

Fabulous boat and a great location - quiet oasis but still near enough to the centre. 10 minutes or so by tram to the Museumsplein, reasonable selection of places to eat on the island, bakery around the corner, two supermarkets just over the bridge, and if you'r arriving by car there's a park and ride at Zeeburg which is easy to drive to in five minutes and to get back from by tram - and much cheaper than anywhere else.

Very friendly and helpful hosts, great accommodation and a lovely location all add up to make it a perfect 10!

Best holiday yet! | 23 July 2009
Rhiannon Lane

I stayed here in May with my partner and 3 of our friends for my 21st birthday. It was marvelous. I didn't expect the boat to be so spacious and the patio roof was a unique touch.
Eugene was very friendly and he even met us when we got lost on the way there - our fault, it's not difficult to find! haha
We will be coming back next May and cannot wait!! I have recommend it to all of our friends who will also come and stay soon.
Thank you for such a great holiday!

Review | 12 July 2009

The house boat was just grand, Eugene was a character, and we liked him quite a bit. This was the end of a 5 week journey and we needed a quiet place to stay. The area was families, good restaurant that Eugene recommended was so good we ate there two times. It was easy to get on the bus and go to town, the boat it's self was more than we expected, the dinning room beyond compare. The beds were great, I would recommend this site and the boat and would stay there every time we go. He had a bar set up and cold beer in the ice box. We were very happy there.

Houseboat Rental | 18 June 2009

We found the houseboat very comfortable and clean. We were happy to be able to spread out and not be confined to a hotel room. Eugene was very helpful and even gave us a great overview of the city in his boat. On the day that we left we were helped with transportation back to the airport. Eugene was there to help with the cab and bid us farewell at %:00 a.m.

we had an amazing stay in eugene's houseboat in amsterdam. it's bigger than it seems in the pictures on the internet site. we enjoyed our sunny evenings in the diningroom with removable roof so much. city center is 10 minutes by tram nr 10 or central station can be reached by bus nr 42 easily. eugene is an amazing host, was a pity to see him so shortly, a few times by day. would be cool to invite him for a beer next time :). we were 6 persons on the boat and the space was more than enough. we will surely come back next year to enjoy the sunny spring side of amsterdam.
thank you eugene, you were amazing.

Houseboat BO20 Review | 19 May 2009
Strobmann-Lindel

Amsterdam, 29.04. – 3.05.2009

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay on "Captains Place ".It was very comfortable and spacious which suited our family of 4. Public transport to the city centre and boathouse was super and very easy to master.Situated in a quiet peaceful area which was ideal to relax in after a day sightseeing in the city.
Reasonably priced ,clean and well equipped houseboat.

What an amazing place to stay!!

The 4 of us stayed on Capt. Eugene's beautiful boat 3-18 to 3-24-09 and had a wonderful time!

As everyone says, pictures just don't do the place justice!! The living space is over 140 sq. meters (HUGE by Amsterdam standards) with two large bedrooms, each with it's own private bath, well stocked kitchen with dishes & appliances, living room with woodburning stove, and (everyone's favorite) a large garden room with retractable roof. The garden room is perfect for relaxing after a long day of sightseeing, or just hanging out, talking and listening to CD's.

The Capt. is a true sailor who refurbished this 100+ year old ship by hand with fine attention to detail. Everything has been done to ensure guests comfort including an interesting library of books & CD's, internet access, washer/dryer on board, several televisions, comfortable warm beds, tourist information, and even spare umbrella's for a rainy day. Everything was absolutely perfect.

The boat is on quiet KMSN Island, only 10 minutes by bus or tram to city center (Central Station). It's a short walk to several resturants, bars, bakery, and Albert Heijn supermarket. You can buy a Sim card for your cellphone at AH Supermarket for $10.

I recommend booking private transportation to & from the Airport. Dragging luggage and negotiating the train into Amsterdam, then the bus to the boat was more that I was capable of after a 9.5 flight! A taxi or private car will drop you at Captain's Place front door.

Buy a transportation pass at the GSV office accross from Central Station for the length of your stay. The pass gives you unlimited access to busses, trams, and the subway (Metro). Even though it seems impossible at first, you will learn the city quickly. Public transportation is excellent!

My only regret was not spending more time with Eugene. Weather permitting, he will take you for a tour of Amsterdam by water. I would hightly recommend this tour, which would let you see the sights with a warm, knowlegable guide and allow you to get to know your host a little better.

FIVE STARS!! We couldn't have found nicer accommodations. We all hope to stay with the Capt. again!

We loved it. Why would anyone stay anywhere else!
We were 3 adults and 2 children aged 5 and 2 (in a cot), 3 nights in February 09. Just big enough for sleeping (only two bedrooms meant some sharing) but we could have used the sofa bed. Lots of space during the day though, easily big enough, and very relaxing.
Warm in every sense of the word, and friendly and helpful. Poor weather didn't spoilt the break.
Convenient for public transport, don't get a taxi, get the 42 bus it really is easier, every 15 mins until late, and on Sunday.
Quiet location, but 15 mins from town.
Get a bus/tram pass for the duration of your stay from the tourist info at the airport, the rail station did not seem to know about these, even though it covers 1 return journey by train to the airport.

As another review says, the pictures don't do the place justice!

The boat is very large and slept six easily. It's extremely well equipped and is only 10 mins from the centre.

Definitely recommend!

We (2 adults, 3 children) stayed on this houseboat for a short weekend of sightseeing in Amsterdam. We enjoyed the quiet residential location slightly out of the centre of the city, which caused us no problems because of the efficient and reasonable public transport. The local facilities (cafe, restaurant, supermarket, small childrens play area) were excellent and convenient.

The houseboat itself was comfortable, warm and excellently furnished. It was very spacious (useful with small children!) and had a home from home feel. The decor was delightful, and the dining area, which was also a patio area was fun. The kitchen in particular was well provided for. It was very comfy and relaxing to return to after a hard days sight seeing!

The hosts were freindly and accomodating, even to returning a small toy left by on e of the children.

I would rate the accomodation highly for a shorrt or longer visit to Amsterdam

Regards

It was by accident to say in phone to Eugene, that I am looking foreward to come to your loveboat! He was laughting. And when I came, there were beautifull roses waiting for me on the dinner table. Not a mention about taking me and my 26 collegues having a little shamppaing party on the boat and after that Eugene took us with his little riverboat to the restorant! What a wonderfull landlord! And the Captains Place it self! We really enjoyd enourmously. I am recomending seriously!

A great holiday! | 28 August 2008

Myself, my husband and two friends stayed on "Captains place" for my husbands birthday in August 2008 and we had a great time.

The boat was huge and the pictures do not do the boat justice, the space inside is fantastic it is located out of the central area, so is peaceful and comfortable yet is only a tram ride to the centre making the boat the ideal sanctury for a base to go and visit the sites of Amsterdam but also to provide a relaxing break.

Eugiene was very helpful and gave us an indication of the immediate facilities nearby (the Italian is very tasty!), and was on hand or a phonecall away if we needed anything.

If we return to Amsterdam we will certainly ask if the boat would be available to stay on again. Definately a memorable holiday.

Houseboat Heaven | 2 August 2008
PJB Family

Our family (2 adults + 2 teen daughters) thoroughly enjoyed our 4 nights visiting the 'Captain's House' houseboat. Eugene was a very attentive host and we especially enjoyed the evening when he took us on a private tour of the canals in his sloop.

The accommodation was especially roomy and comfortably appointed and since the boat was located in a very pleasant residential area we really felt like we were living in Amsterdam. Although not right in the centre of the city, it was very convenient and quick to travel either via public transit or taxi to and from the main attractions of the city.

Would highly recommend - is a memorable experience!!!!

My 15 year old son, 10 year old daughter and I spent 6 wonderful nights on Captains Place in mid-July. The weather was terrible--cold and rainy--but instead of feeling cramped in a hotel room, we had room to spread out and not get in each other's way. The neighborhood is residential--quiet and safe. A quick tram or bus ride into the center of everything made visiting the museums and attractions in Amsterdam quite easy. HIghly recommend this if you are traveling with family. If you're looking to be in the center of activity, this isn't for you...If you like to visit the city but come back to a peaceful place to spend the evening, this is it!

Our time on the boat was a very good and enjoyable experience ! The location was perfect, not too far from the center by tram and far enough to have a quiet and pleasant surrounding. The boat by itself is very neat and very nice. The patio is very enjoyable when the sun is out. And the captain is a very nice and interesting person, that made our stay there even more pleasant. I recommend the tour of the city with him!
In short: this is the perfect place to be in amsterdam as a tourist. Unique !

We really enjoyed staying on "Captain's Place". Most of the time we spent on the boat cooking, drinking and enjoying ourselves. The location is close to the tram stop if you want to go into the City Center. The Italian restaurant next door is terrific! The boat is charming and I would highly recommend it to anyone. We look forward to returning soon. Thanks Eugene for being such a great host.

Our family group stayed at the "Captain's Place" houseboat for four nights this April and found it very comfortable (despite some cold weather!) and cosy. Although there is lots of room for six people, the two bathroomw are both ensuite with the bedrooms, so it's best for four persons. All rooms are very spacious.

We only prepared our breakfasts while on board, but the kitchen is fully equipped for preparation of all meals.

Eugene was a great host - there if we needed him and very helpful about how to get around Amsterdam from the houseboat location.

All in all very enjoyable.

This is the second barge I've stayed on in Amsterdam and Eugene's excellent boat didn't disappoint. It has a HUGE interior, very well fitted out & very cosy. The covered patio is brilliant and the beds were extremely comfortable. It's moored in a lovely area and it's very quick to get into town (literally 10 minutes on the bus to Central Station). We had a faultless stay and can't wait for next time. Thanks Eugene.

The houseboat was amazing , I couldn't believe that the boat was so big and cosy at the same time.
We arrived 3 hours early and eugene was kind enough to let us come to the boat early, the kitchen was huge and fully stocked with drinks , cereals , spices etc
The bedrooms are both en suite and very spacious coupled with the amazing conservatory it really did make for a memorable experience , one which we will be doing again and again
5 star
Highly reccomended

Eugene's Boat - FANTASTIC! | 19 June 2007
Billy Grace
email: b (dot) grace (at) virgin (dot) net

What can I say! This was a short 4 day trip from England with our two friends. Eugene picked us up from Central Station in his Launch. FANTASTIC, a few mins, (20 or so) and we were at the Houseboat. The front was being painted but that didn’t distract from how great a place this is to stay! Eugene was a great host and explained all there was to know about the boat. I especially liked the well stocked beer and wine fridge (small fee of course. The boat has two great double master bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms with baths & showers, very comfortable indeed. We even caught a fish one morning without trying with a line and bacon rind..... Would I (we) recommend this as a great place to stay in Amsterdam. OF COURSE!!! I would give this my highest recommendation and I would urge you all to give it a go and book! Oh and try the Italian restaurant round the corner - Fantastic!!!

Captain's Place is a delight. | 22 April 2007

email: margaret_metz (at) yahoo (dot) com

THis houseboat is amazing. It is even larger and nicer than it appears in the pictures and Eugene is a wonderful host. He graciously picked us up at the station in his sloop and gave us a short tour on the way to houseboat. The accomodations are lovely, the beds very comfortable and the ambiance of being on the boat was great fun. The only downside to the boat is that it is not very centrally located and there are not a lot of restaurant choices nearby but it is only a 10 minute tram ride to the Leidseplein in the heart of Amsterdam. You can't beat the quality and spaciousness of the accomodations for the price. And be sure to hire Eugene to take you on the 2 hour canal tour -- it's a fantastic way to see the city. I recommend this houseboat highly.

Houseboat B020 | 9 April 2007
Richard Moon

Our visit was 1-4 April 2007. Very enjoyable four days in Amsterdam. We found the houseboat very spacious and comfortable - plenty of room for our two teenagers to spread out. MSN available for our daughter was much appreciated. Eugene was very helpful - being picked up from the Central Station in his sloop made for an interesting start to the holiday and the barge was well stocked with beer & wine which saved us carrying heavy loads back from the supermarket. Being slightly outside the centre, the area has more of a neighbourhood feel than the main tourist areas in the centre of Amsterdam. The area was trendy, quiet & safe with a supermarket, shops, and restaurants within very easy walking distance. Public transport was very good (both trams & buses stopped nearby every 10 minutes or so) which made access to the centre of Amsterdam extremely easy as well as giving our family more of an insight into day-to-day Dutch life.

We were very happy with our decision to stay on a houseboat during our stay in Amsterdam. Our choice of Houseboat B020 couldn't have been better. It was an absolutely lovely boat. Eugene, the boat's owner, and our host, was wonderful. He made himself available, but also gave us plenty of privacy. He gave us the grand tour when we arrived and explained how everything worked and how we could reach him if we had any problems. The boat is a short walk to either a tram or bus stop which can get you anywhere in the city in just about 10 minutes. We had four adults staying on the boat. There was plenty of room. We could've easily slept another couple. Each bedroom and bathroom was very large. Each bedroom offered plenty of privacy.

Excellent choice, you won't be disappointed. Would definitely stay again.

I thoroughly enjoyed the stay at this houseboat. Our host was most helpful and generous and the boat had all comforts one could expect. Located in a great part of Amsterdam, only about 10 minutes by tram to Leidseplein or by bus to Central Railway station. An excellent alternative for staying in a hotel over multiple rooms, this offers so much more privacy and comfort. Thanks, my family and I enjoyed our stay. Bart (holidaying from Australia)

We stayed on eugenes boat for 4 nights, what a boat is all i can say. Eugene picked us up from central station on his sloop. when we arrived boat didn't look the best from outside but when we stepped inside the door we couldn't believe our eyes there was 4 of us staying on the boat and there was plenty of room.

The patio room was my favourite at night the was lovely lights that lit up it was very homey. And you felt very safe there. amsterdam city was far away just a ten min bus ride. The boat was well worth the money i will never stay in a hotel again.

Wow, what a weekend! This unique boat made the holiday.

There were 8 of us - and although it says it sleeps 6 - there was loads of space. The boat is much bigger than we expected and a real home from home - loads of personal touchs and full of character. Amazing kitchen, 2 luxury bathrooms - really comfy beds - warm and cosy with central heating and a wood stove. We didn't want leave...

Eugene was an excellent host (not at all intrusive and really friendly)- kept us well stocked up with beer, wine and wood for the fire - he even sorted us out with pizza the night we arrived.

The area was perfectly safe, peaceful and picturesqe - with loads of great cafes, shops and gallerys - and not too far from the centre. I would highly recommend it .... Excellent!

We just returned from a 5-day visit in Amsterdam. Piet was our host and made us feel right at home in Eugene's absence. We were a family of 6 travelling (ranging in age from 75 yrs to 1 yr !) and everyone was very comfortable. It was a great surprise for my 6 yr old as well as my parents and probably a highlight of our stay. I had considered renting a canal house, but after climbing up and down multiple levels of narrow, small steps during our intown visits, I was delighted that I opted for the roomy one-level main living area. The accommodations are homey and spacious and are perfect for just hanging out, especially on the one day we had rain (and perhaps that was in part why we were in no hurry to get moving in the mornings). The bus and tram are convenient to the boat and made getting to any area of town easy. I would highly recommend this houseboat for anyone considering a unique experience!

We stayed on the houseboat on Levantkade for five nights, my wife, our three adult children, and I. We enjoyed it very much. It is very ample and pleasant with lots of light. We were concerned with the location, a modern island development at the end of the line for a bus and the number 10 tram, but we soon came to realize that this was a very good location, in a lively Dutch neighborhood full of young families and with significant diversity. It was a pleasure to cook there and just hang out, whether it was overcast or nice outside. The tram gets you to the museums with dispatch and the bus gets you to the central station.

We will recommend it to friends and, through this website, to strangers.

Wow, impressive accommodation, spacious and comfortable - everything you need for a great stay. Eugene - who owns the boat - picked us up from Centraal Station on his sloop. He's a nice guy, makes you welcome. Transport links to attractions are a five minute walk away - trains, trams and boats.
The area of "The Captain's Place," is completely safe - security onboard isn't an issue.
Internet access on board also - great for us!
My buddy sometimes suffers sea sickness, he worried about his stay on the houseboat - NOT A PROBLEM, it hardly moves because its so big.
The retractable roof over the dining garden is wicked! I thoroughly recommend this place - it is so different, so reasonable and that bit more comfortable than an hotel or appartment!

Perfect in every way! | 16 July 2006

Despite a little confusion over our arrival time we were greeted by the owner of the boat (Eugene) who was taking the opportunity to carry out a little mainenance during the spell of warm weather. My family and I stayed for three nights aboard 'Captain's Place' and found both the accommodation and it's location ideal. The boat is in a quiete little area with two or three bars/bistro's on the dockside. The centre of Amsterdam is merely a tram ride away. The stop is a 5min walk from the boat and the No 10 will take you straight to central station, or No 26 will drop you virtually outside Vondepark. The boat itself is huge, with two large bedrooms (both with ensuite and two living areas. The middle living space has a unique retractable roof, bringing the outdoors in. The other has TV, stereo, plenty of seating and has a large open plan kitchen with every utensil imaginable to give all your home comforts. Our host had even bought in a crate of lager (some even chilled) and chilled two bottles of wine! With the only extra costs being; a boat trip (50E per hour with the host as sailor and guide and well worth it!, the beer and wine we drank and access to the internet for our 12 yr old daughter, we found it all good value. The boat has a deceiving look from the outside. Until we boarded, we were not sure that we were in the right place. Once down in the boats living quarters however, we found a spacious, welcoming and traditional feel which far exceeded our expectations. Despite having visited Amsterdam previously our stay was made to feel more worthwhile for staying at the Captain's Place'. Spending time with local residence and using the public transport (which was easy), helped us to soak up more culture than anticipated. We recommend this boat and it's location to any traveller, it was a pleasure!

Beautiful houseboat, friendly welcome and undisturbed relaxation. Thank you, Captain! Most recommended for all holiday planners, except if their reservation dates coincide with ours. ;) Peter and family from Hungary

Great Way to Go! | 24 June 2006
Lisa from Hershey, PA

Houseboat B020 was a terrific place to stay in Amsterdam! A quiet location, yet still close enough to everything. Four adults were very comfortable when we vacationed there in March 2006. We most particularly enjoyed the retractable-roofed patio as a gathering and dining place - it was lovely! Thanks so much. We'll be back!

Wow. | 30 May 2006

email: ddubov (at) gmail (dot) com

So we pull up on the #42 bus, the end of the line at KNSM Laan, thinking "Where the heck are we and what have we gotten ourselves into?" A short walk down the pier looking at the boats along the way didn't do anything to encourage us as they all looked (to our untrained eyes) like working boats and barges, certainly not houseboats...

Number 184 came up and it didn't stand out from the rest, except for the profusion of potted plants outside. This should have been our first clue... We were invited down inside by a man (who we figured later must be a neighbor or friend of Eugene) and, well, WOW.

The huge interior hit us with its enveloping warmth and hominess. Eugene showed us around and explained the workings of the boat and the accomodations. I think our mouths were hanging open the entire time, but he must be used to that... Two gargantuan bedrooms and beautiful bathrooms took up a third of the boat at the bow, nicely decorated and furnished. The galley kitchen, large enough for four people to maneuver around and cook, the living room and washer/dryer took up another third, all wood cabinets and brass accents, appropriate for a boat.

The final, middle third, was occupied by a veritable greenhouse of plants that was illuminated by a retractable translucent roof, while a comfortable bench and dining table rounded out the best room in the boat, our favorite place to sit.

What more can I say? Quiet and residential, easy to get to and convenient to everything by tram or bus, this was the perfect place to stay. I only wish my own home was rocked by gentle waves and quiet breezes!

No doubt we'll be back. Thanks, Eugene, for your wonderful hospitality and our brief home away from home in Amsterdam.

The boat was exactly as described on the website and offered everything required for a great holiday. Clean, well maintained, loads of room and well furnished - all the little touches were appreciated as well, candles etc for cosy nights in (if you wanted to). The owner was pleasant and helpful without being intrusive. Safe area and less than 10 minutes from central station by bus - ideal. We would definately recommend it and will return.

We stayed here during the summer with a group of about 6 of us. A friend was getting married, and didn't know what we had booked for him. Utterly fantastic. Spent most of the time just lazing out on the deck watching other boats go by. Really nice area to stay in, accomidation was very well kept. Hope Eugene is reading this, as would really like to say thanks for the hospitality!

Great stay on B020 | 24 February 2006

There is no way that pictures can describe how great this experience was for us. We are a family of five and this was absolutely the neatest place we have ever stayed. First of all, the place is huge -- the size of 5 hotel rooms. It has two large bedrooms, each with a large bath, a covered (in winter) porch that serves as a specious and eclectic dining room, a separate living room, a full and big kitchen, a wood burning stove, a high speed internet connection, and a washer dryer. Secondly, Captain's place is really a work of art, a transformed cargo ship that Eugene (Captain) built about ten years ago. Third, Eugene is a gracious host. He picked us up from the train station in his sloop and painstakingly walked us trough Captain's Place, telling us about every detail.

We had no complaints at all and would stay there again. Amsterdam is a great city, explored easily by trams and buses right near the houseboat.

Forget a hotel room. Have a truly memorable experience at Captain's Place.

Captian's Place was a pleasant surprise from the start. Eugene was helpful and accomodating with a well stocked spice rack and some of the nicest cabinetry I have seen. The furnishings are early eclectic with an honest nautical flavor. The bedrooms were spacious and the bathrooms were large. The dining rooms/living rooms were great for sitting and discussing the day's art and coffe shop exploring. We wish we had been able to stay much longer. Even in the winter, A'dam is great and the Captian's Place was cozy and warm. Quiet, private, and off the beaten path. Highly recommended. We'll be back, Eugene.

Houseboat B020 | 29 October 2005
Cochrane Family

Have just returned from 3 nights on the fabulous Houseboat B020. The biggest advantage for us, was being away from the city centre at night. We spent our days exploring wonderful Amsterdam and then returned the peace and solitude of Captains Place. The boat is incredibly spacious and our host Eugene was discretely available to give useful tips and information. A very, very good Italian restaurant right across the street and an excellent Oriental restaurant on another corner provided a welcome break from catering!

We can highly recommend this accommodation and hope to return to wonderful Amsterdam - thank you Eugene!

My husband and I rented Eugene's houseboat "Captain's Place" for a weeks vacation with our 3 adult children ages 20, 26 and 27. We had kept the information about where we were staying a secret from the kids. Imagine their surprise and delight when we pulled up to this fantastic houseboat! Once inside the amount of room and the conveniences were amazing. The sunroom with it's retractable roof was filled with flowers and plants and became our favorite room. The bedrooms were spacious and comfortable and I loved falling to sleep with the sound of the water lapping the sides of the boat. A friendly swam came to the porthole one night for a snack which quickly became a nightly occurance. The location was so convenient to buses and trams and a short walk from many stores and restaurants. We even enjoyed several swims in the canal! Eugene was a delight as was his daughter. I'd stay there again in a minute!

We have just had a great four days on Captain's Place. Eugene was an excellent host. The boat ride from Centraal Station was a fantastic introduction to Amsterdam. Very spacious and comfortable boat - much better than a conventional hotel. Availability of bikes to hire at very reasonable rates was also a great plus. Highly recommended !!

Family of 5 Yanks had a wonderful stay on Eugene's houseboat. Much better than a hotel for the culture and local feeling of Amsterdam. Kids loved the space and amenities, wife loved the big bathrooms and bedrooms. I loved the proximity to the city. The houseboat was the highlight of our European trip and would be repeated anytime we returned.

We loved it. Two couples who travel every New Years to a different city really enjoyed this houseboat. It was low key and easy but with everything that was needed. Well-stocked kitchen, internet, great hot showers, comfy beds, wonderful location, cozy atmosphere and Amsterdam at our fingertips - what more could you ask for! Highly, highly recommend! (FWIW, New Years was tres special in Amsterdam!)

Wow! We honestly thought we were standing outside the wrong boat when we arrived. This boat is huge!!! There were only 3 people in our group on this boat so we had more than enough room. We could see how you could accommodate 8 people no problem though. Our host Eugene was wonderfully laid back. He showed us everything we needed, pointed us in the right direction and then let us get on with exploring Amsterdam.

We visited at the end of March and the boat was lovely and warm. The garden area was great just to lounge about in and ‘chill out’ after a hard day of taking in all Amsterdam has to er… offer! The kitchen had everything we needed and some beers in the fridge too! The bedrooms and bathrooms were charming.

The area is fairly quiet with a few cafes and one or two bars nearby. The super market is just a few minutes walk across the bridge. There is also a football court a few hundred yards away if you’re feeling energetic.

The nr. 10 tram stop is only a few minutes walk from the boat and the journey to town, via the Heineken Factory, takes only about 10 minutes.

This really is amazing compared to the little box you could get at the Holiday Inn etc... Words, or the photographs alone can not do this place justice. Try it. You can experience the city and still have the lie in you will need!!!!

I talked my willing spouse into staying on a houseboat this trip to Amsterdam for us. She having never stayed on any boat overnight and was quite suspicious at the inception, but the ever dutiful mate going along with hare brained schemes of her spouse, she ageed. Cynthia could have picked her teeth up off the floor when she actually came aboard and saw this palatial Dutch barge of 38 meters with seperate bedrooms, seperate baths, and a wood burning fireplace, all lovingly restored.. Eugene, the ever graceful Captain/host gave us a complete tour of all marine systems as we were there with three children. The boat had a dedicated aDSL connection with computer which made the kids happy and occupied, which made their parents pleased. We found we could have bus #42 drop us off right in front of the boat, from Central Station just down from Sissy-Boy which made the island location of our barge very handy for the sites. Both the girls found the idea of a long day of site seeing followed by a luxurous bath while others prepare dinner in the ultra modern on board kitchen simply captivating. What a way to spend a week, we will be back!

Dutch hospitality at its' finest! Captain Reijmer's excellent houseboat is warm, beautiful and practical all at the same time. There were five singles in our party and we all agree that the boat was spacious enough to accomodate our individual needs for space. It was the perfect base for our week long visit to the Netherlands. Capt. Reijmer's went out of his way to assist us and we are very grateful for his help. Thanks, Captain's Place, we'll do it again!

A beatifully converted boat in a quiet part of the city that can only be described as a home from home.

Warm and spacious living areas, comfortable beds, generously sized bathrooms and a well equipped and thoroughly useable kitchen ensured that our short stay in Amsterdam was a pleasure. The conveneince of nearby tram and bus stops meant that we could enjoy peaceful accommodation whilst wasting little time reaching any part of the city.

Our only regret, visiting at the time of year we did, was not to be able to enjoy the open garden area in the summer!

The Captain's Place is highly recommended to anyone tired of chain hotels and looking for something unusual, comfortable and relaxing.

Captains Place was great to stay in and Eugene was a good host. Staying in one these houseboats is far better than a hotel option as you really get to really feel part of the culture and atmosphere. The boat itself is great. Very comfortable, warm and with a nice 'lived in' feel. The surrounding are also pretty cool as it's an upmarket part of Amsterdam with interesting architecture and bridge design - nicely away from the hectic city centre.

As you'd expect the public transport is easy to use, good value and convenient. If you want pampering and luxury, then go for a 5 star hotel. If you want a romantic and unique experience and you like woodburners and a quirky feel then this is your kind of place.

We'd definitely stay there again and would recommend it to anyone. For those of you who don't like boats, give it a try - it doesn't move much so there's no way you'd get sea sick !!

We had a wonderful time in Amsterdam and sincerely the high point was finding ourselves at the most extraordinairy boat house with its own garden room and a living room equipped with a fireplace stove. We had six adults who all slept extremely comfortably. Eugene met us at the train station and we rode by speed boat to the place. We could not believe how wonderful his place was. He gave us lots of privacy but he is a charming man and we all would have enjoyed his company had he wanted to stay. By the way, go to the small Italian restaurant on the corner, great food. Also the #10 trolley was our main transportation and from it we transferred to other trolley's to reach all destinations. The trolley system in Amsterdam is fast and reaches within a block or two of any destination around the city. The trolley cost around 1,50 Euro for transportation for one hour. It cost 3,20 Euro to travel from the Airport to Central Train Station.

We only stayed for 4 nights and wish we had time to stay longer! We travel frequently and this was the first time on anything like this. Easy to find, clean and well equipted. The "Captain" was helpful, friendly and saved the day since we screwed up on parking. Do not park at the grocery store garage! The parking is a little further away so check before you enter. THe Captain drove us to the parking garage, paid for the parking and then we reimbursed him. It was a hassel, but no telling what would have happended had he not been around. I highly recommend this location - you are close enough to local transportation yet far enough away that the 'drunk tourists' won't keep you awake all night. The birds that swim around the boat are not dangerous - as long as you feed them! They were pecking at the portholes looking for handouts the entire time we were there.

We totally enjoyed our stay at the "Captains Place" it was like our home away from home. We did not need anything more everything was there. The kitchen was a pleasure to cook in, we only ate out twice in 10 days! The central garden sitting area was an oasis of beauty and made our stay all the more pleasant. Everyday we had wild swans and ducks visiting our window. I would not hesitate to return for another quiet and peacefull taste of Amsterdam canal life.

Rent this houseboat immediately - but beware evil swans! | 13 July 2004
Rob Minson
email: beardmasteruk (at) hotmail (dot) com

This houseboat was an absolute joy to stay in. The first thing we noticed when we stepped on board was the sheer size of the thing, a huge galley kitchen which is almost certainly better equipped than your own, a large living room with TV and DVD player, then the conservatory with sliding roof and a minor jungle inside. This is not really what I picture when I think of a houseboat, no ducking through tiny doorways or washing up whilst wedged in to some sweaty kitchenette. This is more of a house-ship.

Two big supermarkets are about 10/15 minutes walk, and the bus to the centre picks up every 15 minutes from a stop about 200 yards away.

For those of you who are keen on evil, murderous water-fowl there is a giant, killer swan that payed us a visit once of twice a day. They say a swan can break a man's arm with its wing; this monster looked pissed off enough to rip you in half with its beak. But potential visitors shouldn't worry too much, it appeared to be far too lazy to actually try flying up on deck.

Highly recommended.

We spent 4 days at the end of March 04 on this houseboat (4 people). We were absolutely amazed when we first walked onto the boat, the images on the website do not do it justice at all!!! I would totally recommend you experience a stay on this boat. Our host Eugene was extremely helpful and the provisions available on board are second to none. The boat is clean, romantic and refreshing. The bedrooms are beautiful and you will be hard set to find a more interesting and special way to spend a few days getting away from it all. The garden on the boat is a real treat and many a night can be spent sitting enjoying the surroundings. It is ideally located for people interested in a different side to Amsterdam as it is easily accessible to the city but also away from the hustle and bustle. This was our fourth trip to Holland and we will definitely be back to this special houseboat.

The entire stay in houseboat B020 was great.

We had a very late arrival at Amsterdam around 11pm, the boat owner Eugine was very kind to pick us up at ferry by the train station with his private boat. Seeing the city after dark, the journey from the station to the boat house was even greater than the sightseeing canal boat tour!

The boat house is exactly like what you can expect from the website, or even better. Every room is spacious, and the patio is the oasis of the boathouse. Eugine had everything handy that make our stay just like at home, in addition with views to the river, blue sky and a breath of freedom.

The neighborhood is very nice, convenient and quiet. Seeing pepole riding bikes, playing soccer, and other daily life activities, it is a nice place to experience another aspect of Amsterdam.

We would definately stay in this boathouse again while we visit Amsterdam! Highly recommended!

We spent the last week in "The Captain's Place", a wonderful houseboat not too far from central Amsterdam. The boat was spacious, clean, well-equipped with everything we could possibly have needed. It was near to the tram (~10 minutes to Central Station), shopping (10 minutes walk, ~5 minutes by bike --which you can borrow from the boat), restaurants (within 5 minutes walk). The owner was delightful -- incredibly helpful, but never intrusive. Ideal for families who don't mind being outside the hubub of the center, but want to be within easy striking distance.

This houseboat was a real surprise - very spacious and well equipped, comfortable and warm. The "garden" in the middle of the boat was fantastic. Eugene couldn't have been more friendly and helpful - he had even bought a fourth bike so we could rent one each (very reasonable rates). We also made good use of the beer and basic provisions he had laid in!
Although a little out of the centre it was no trouble getting in & out by bus (no.s 59 & 28 are by far the quickest) and will be even better next month when the tram line opens, going direct (I think) to the Rijksmuseum. Visit and enjoy!

Four of us flew into Amsterdam for a long weekend. We found our host to be fantastic. Eugene met us at the central train station around 2pm on Friday 13-02-04. He was very nice and spoke wonderful english. He pick us up by small motor boat and drove us to our houseboat B020 about 15 minutes away on the island of Borneolaan. The island is in a very nice part of Amsterdam and was very clean. There are small stores just 10 minutes by foot and two great resturants 20 meters from the boat. The houseboat is by far they best boat we have ever been on. Eugen has taken great pride in his boat and it truelly shows. He explained everything to us and even had a beer with us Saturday night. There are two bikes that we used to go shopping and to get around. The bus will pick you up right outside the boat to take you to the central station. We recommend Eugene's houseboat with the upmost regards. He is a great host and the boat is simply fantastic. Anyone who gets to stay will be in awe!

We spent four days on the house-boat of Eugene (over the years 2003-4) and I can say we had a great time, the house-boat is wonderful (first we've been a bit sceptical because of winter, but Eugene has central head and it was always warm)and it's such a difference to stay on a spacious place like this and not in a small hotel room. Also Eugene is a fabolous host, full of humour and really helpful in all the things we wanted to know 'bout Amsterdam. So I can really recommand his place and I hope it was not the last time!

We spent an amazing 5 days on Eugenes house boat and were so thrilled we wish we could have stayed longe. It was quiet, not touristy at all, comfortable with plenty of head room not often found on house boats, and we were 10 minutes bus ride to the central station. Having a fully-equipped kitchen made the stay wonderful to not have to eat out for every meal. Our hosts, Eugene (and Piet) were warm and helpful.
I can absolutely recommend this boat as opposed to hotel or apartment living in Amsterdam. It was incredible to be surrounded by old boats and new architecture on the island.

We stayed on boat B020 30 Oct - 2 Nov (8 people), perfect, impresive...you can have a look at the pictures in the website...and after you are there you cannot imagine, it's even better. We enjoyed the accomodation intensely.
The weather was cold and raining but doesn't matter...the boat is really comfortable. The owner, Eugene, is very friendly and kindly and gave us great advice about all type of things we can do. He also gave us a bottle of wine, flowers, ... He has also bikes (low additional charge) and we could enjoy Amsterdam by bike.

I cannot describe, you have to go...I can explain something to my friends and family but, finally, it's better to go there and to have this experience yourself.

I would highly recommend it to anyone.

I hope to come back again...soon.
