Boat Ideaal is a beautifully renovated boat, moored on the Amstel River, in the area of De Pijp, we stayed for 4 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Martin, the boat owner was friendly and very helpful and told us all about the area. The boat was extremely well equiped and comfortable and we would recommend it to anyone wanting to stay in the area of De Pijp. The best accommodation we've stayed at in Amsterdam, it's in an interesting area (beer is half the price of central Amsterdam, there is a great market and nice places to eat - try Bazar on Albert Cupmaarkt, highly recommended!) and it is only 30 minutes walk to the centre or the number 4 tram which runs every ten minutes. Great place to stay, beautiful boat, good value for money.

Very nice Studio!
Clean, good location, friendly owner.
We enjoyed our stay and would recommend this studio to everyone.
Just the fact that the double bed only had one blanket was a little bit difficlut with two boys in this bed ;)

Hi,
I would definately recommend staying on Martins boat it was very centrally located to the city and beautifully decked out inside with plenty of room to move about & Martin was a great host. When i return to Amsterdam soon i will be staying on the boat again .

Warm home during Amsterdam winter | 4 February 2011
Willem

I love this studio. It occupies the front half of the 'ideaal' ship, making it very spacious. With wood panelling throughout, central heating and even a full tub, you would almost forget that you're in the hull of a ship -- until you look up through the roof windows.

The location is a brisk walk south of the city center, but is great for exploring the bohemian Pijp, the East and a good option when visiting the RAI conference center.

Fantastic! | 25 October 2010
Mark Lusty

I had a fantastic stay on board and my host was very friendly and helpful throughout my stay on board. Martin went out of his way to help me find things of interest in and arouind the city.

The boat itself was very warm and comfortable, I visit the city regularly and would return to the boat.

Thank you so much.

Kind regards

Mark

Very comfortable location | 6 August 2010

Excellent location for me and my family , 5 days in Amsterdam. I found all facilities I need to enjoy my stayng in vacation, tv, wifi, tools for cooking. 4 beds and good bathroom. All interiors are in wood. I strongly recommend .

I recommend this houseboat | 22 April 2010
Georges Lemieux

We wanted to experience a little of Amsterdam by staying on a houseboat and we were very satisfied with the experience. Quality/price ratio was very good, equivalent to staying in a 3/4 star hotel in Amsterdam. Houseboat was very well equipped: we could use micro wave and hot plate for simple meals; full bathroom, satellite TV, and comfortable beds. All four of us, 2 adults and 2 children, slept happily. We were particularly grateful for high speed internet since we had to make last minute travel changes and this came very handy. The owner, Mr. Elburg, was very hospitable, helpful and very tolerant of our two little lively children. The houseboat is located in a "funky" area of Amsterdam which is off the beaten path and allowed us to discover a "truer" Amsterdam that most tourists will know. At the same time, it was close to restaurants and public transporation. To summarize, we very much enjoyed our experience on this houseboat and highly recommend it.

Great Boat | 16 March 2010
Emma & Alan

The boat was really nice, much bigger than shown in the photos, it was really warm and cosy with everything we needed for our stay (including a hairdryer). Martin was really friendly and very helpful throughout our stay, he took the time to show us the attractions on the map and answer any of our questions.

The boat is in a quiet area but within walking distance of nice restarants and bars which we were able to find easily by looking them up on the on-board PC with internet connnetion before heading out.

We would thouroughly recommend staying on this boat, we had a great time!!

Cordialement

We had a very pleasant stay in mid-October in Amsterdam - Martin(the host) were there to welcome us, an he showed us how things functioned on the boat.
Most of the day we were around in Amsterdam - so it was in the mornings and evenings we used the boat, but we are very satisfied with the stay, an wouldn´t mind to do it again some day!

excellent stay | 12 October 2009
Kayla

The house boat was excellent. I am without any complaints. It was our first time in Ammsterdam and it was just me and my boyfriend. It was very cozy, had plenty of necessities like towels, extra toilet paper, kitchen supplies, coffee, blankets, pillows, everything you could need. The location seems a little far but if you rent a bike (which is the only and the best way to go in Amsterdam) it is not far at all. The owner was very nice, explained everything and the rest of the time we didn't even notice him or his family who live in the front part of the boat. It definitely felt like it was to ourselves. We would definitely stay here again and recommend it to whoever is checking it out. I love Amsterdam!!

Thank you so much for accommodation, we were above expectations satisfied. Big space, hot water, internet connection, barbecue on board, just all without mistake. If we go to Amsterdam again, we would certainly use your accommodation again. Martin thanks a lot, it was great.

We thank Martin for his good hospitality on his beautiful houseboat. The studio was big and cosy, even the mattress was soft enough, like at home!!!

Really impressed | 4 February 2009

email: telconpm (at) eircom (dot) net

I thought the photos looked nice, but the reality was even better. The space aboard was much bigger than I anticipated. Martin might live on the other half of the boat, but in fairness to him, you'd never even know he was there, but if you needed help, he was more than willing, be it for directions to the shops, the tram or how to light the fire. Despite the freezing temperatures, the boat was lovely and warm and there was no need for the fire...it was just an extra little indulgence! :)

Fantastic Houseboat | 4 January 2009
Derek Hooper
email: d3xtr (at) hotmail (dot) com

We had a fantastic time staying on this houseboat. The location is perfect, being an easy and pretty walk from the city centre and the museums of Van Gogh, Rijks museum etc. Conveniently close to shops, cafes, restaurants and the tram as well if you don't want to walk.

The accomodation is comfortable, spacious, warm and homely. Absolutely no complaints about anything. Shower was great, always lots of hot water, the heating worked perfectly and the wood stove was a nice way to add some cosiness (although it wasn't necessary with the central heating). Having a computer with internet connection and some speakers was a great bonus too. We could play our ipods and check details for tourist stuff and maps on the internet. Beds were comfortable and spacious.

There were four of staying on board, my fiance and I and our respective siblings. The four of us had plenty of space and while sharing one room (it is a studio steup with separate kitchen) we had easy privacy also due to the layout and the space.

Martin was a perfect host, there to meet us and give advice, on hand should we need him and made sure we had everything we needed.

I have been to Amsterdam a number of times and this was the best place I've stayed. I will always go back here in the future and will recommend the 'studio houseboat' to all our friends.

email: chiodinc (at) hotmail (dot) com

This was the only way to spend a short vacation in Amsterdam. Imagine returning to your very own houseboat and a warm fire after a day of sightseeing in the winter. Excellent! The studio was very clean and well maintained. Very roomy and comfortable. Close enough to the main center of town to be convinient but far enough away to be quiet. Very easy to find; this houseboat only 10 minutes from Central Station. I will recomend this houseboat to anyone and hope to spend some more quality vacation time on her in the future. The only downside was I stayed "on the town" most of the time and didn't really get to meet the owner except for a few minute's chat. It would have been interesting for me to discuss the history of his boat with him. Rating A+

I have been traveling a lot and I was looking for a different kind of experience. I am glad that I rented this boat studio. It is more personal and romantic place to go -rather than a 3-4 star hotel.
Prepare to use a bicycle or to take a taxi. Having a car on site is an option (I think it was 13Euro/day) but not recommended.
There is plenty of space and it can easily accommodate 4 people. Keep in mind that is a studio.
If you do not mind do some minor maintenance by yourself I recommend it.

Rustic Houseboat | 10 August 2008
F.W.

We went to amsterdam for five nights and stayed in Martins Houseboat.

Martin is a very nice host, he speaks english and german very well. He showed us everything in the boat, explained everything we needed and showed us some nice spots of amsterdam on his city map. He also offered his help every time we need it.

The houseboat is very rustic and beautiful. Its not a luxury palace, more like a real ships cabin but that's what it makes so special.

What might be interesting for visitors: the bed is very very soft, the mattresses are not the best. The couch has a little displeasing material.

What's also nice to know: There is another boat behind this one. People who live in the boat behind have to walk on this houseboat to access their boat. That is a bit loud inside.

The boat has a really nice atmosphere, it's much more interesting than a simple room in a hotel!

The computer is free for use, which is a very nice thing. It has a fast internet connection so surfing is very comfortable. Google Earth is installed with interesting spots provided by Martin.

We really enjoyed our stay and can recommend this boat to all future guests!

Thanks to Martin for this nice boat!

We really enjoyed our stay on Hotelboat Ideaal. Martin and his family were lovely. When choosing accommodations, staying outside of the tourist hot-spots is one of our main priorities. This boat was perfect for us. Amsterdam is a completely walkable city. If walking isn't your thing, the tram route is only a few blocks away and will take you straight into the center of town. There is also a wonderful coffeeshop just up the street (The Greenhouse). We would definitely stay here again.

email: marcus_trummer (at) hotmail (dot) com

Boat BS16, Studio gave us a great stay! We were four persons staying two nights. Space was plentiful and the deck with sunshine morning to evening kept us from seeing a few of the sights the city has to offer... Very welcoming host and in no way intrusive but let us mind ourselves and was there for our questions.

Would go again!

Good accomodation for four.... Owner helpful but not intrusive. Lots of hot water. Small but efficient kitchen, I would only add a sharp knife and a toaster to the inventory.

Close to tram to downtown which was two blocks over and ran frequently. Nice area ...close to grocery store and some good restaurants. A good experience overall...

Boat great for children | 26 March 2008
Sarah Vaughan-Roberts

We had a lovely time on Martin's boat which was warm and cosy in spite of very cold weather during our stay. The kids loved the experience and the large room provided a great place for them to play and relax after a hard day of sight-seeing. We found lots of good local restaurants within a 10 minute walk of the boat and again the children were made to feel very welcome. It was also nice to stay somewhere quiet and away from the tourist centre.

11 February 2008
Kait Hall

I had stayed in Amsterdam previously in a hostel, camping cabin, and a hotel and this was by far the best experience. The boat was so spacious and cosy warm in the middle of winter. The wood fire is a really nice touch and the cooking facilities while quite basic mean you get a real sense of home and save cash on eating out for every meal too.

Our host Martin was there when we needed him but on the whole the boat was very private and quiet. It is not close to town so if you want to be in the heart of things this may not be the boat for you. This didn't bother us, we were happy to walk 5 minutes to the tram or train station and be in town in another 10 minutes by public transport.

Highly recommend the experience.

Very cozy houseboat | 6 February 2008
Mrs. Larsen, Denmark

We stayed on Martins houseboat for 5 nights during january, and the stay couldn’t have been better. Some days were cold and rainy, but that didn’t really matter, ‘cause we could just stay inside in a warm and very cozy houseboat with coffee and books. How great is that! The room is really big and surprisingly bright with the daylight coming in from above. It was nice to stay in a place where you felt so much at home during a holiday, instead of a small hotelroom.

The location is great,-you get to experience more of Amsterdam than just city centre, and the view is amazing over the Amstel river. We hope to be back in a warmer period, so we can enjoy the terrace. Martin was really friendly and helpful, -also when we forgot our phone on the boat. He checked out different opportunities of delivery for us, and we received the phone within a few days. Great!

Bob Dee
email: bob (dot) dee (at) btinternet (dot) com

Our September 2007 stay on this boat was a real pleasure. The boat is cosy yet spacious, warm, comfortable and full of character. The bottle of wine waiting for us as we arrived, tired and late in the evening, was a treat and indicates the friendliness of our host. Although the boat isn't in the city centre, a frequent tram service is just a few minutes walk away, so getting into town is easy. We'd definitely stay again.. and for longer.

email: adenotter (at) xplornet (dot) com

We really enjoyed the houseboat. We were on it for 6 nights. It was clean and had everything we need. Martin was very helpful in explaining how to get around and how the houseboat worked. It was like we had our own home in Amsterdam. The boat was spacious and thus we had enough room for the three of us. The deck was a great place to people watch and look at the canal and all it's going on. Amazingly it was also not to noisy topside and in the boat it was quiet and restful. The location is perfect, you can walk to everything in the downtown area and there are lots of great places to eat and shop. The location is also close to the train if you want to go further away. I'd recommend this to anybody thinking about going to Amsterdam. My rating would be 10/10. We will stay at BS16 next time we are in Amsterdam.

Albert and Petra.

Enjoyable stay | 26 February 2007

We enjoyed our stay in the houseboat very much. We found the woodstove cosy to have and it was also necessary as the central heating was not quite adequate during winter.

Martin was a wonderful host and was also helpful.

Be reminded that there is no direct view to the river from inside the houseboat though we didn't actually mind.

Wonderful experience on houseboat BS16 | 1 August 2006
Kumar

Our family of four had a wonderful experience living in houseboat BS16 in the first week of July 2006. Martin is a friendly and considerate host. In addition to making our houseboat stay comfortable, he also helped us plan our sightseeing trips in Amsterdam.

Living on a houseboat is a great experience, which I would recommend to the adventurous. BS 16 has most of the amenities a hotel could give you, plus it has the on- the-water feeling that a land hotel cannot provide. Martin's boat even has a computer with high-speed internet, which seemed faster than my home machine!

We found that the boat was too warm in the evening when we returned after our day trips. Martin took care of this by turning on the a/c a few hours before we came back. Having him around in the front of the boat, unobtrusive unless you want him, is a comforting thought.

We cooked and ate on the boat on two nights. It is a great feeling to be on the deck as you eat, watching other boats with revelers of all kinds pass by. It is bright till 10 p.m., and looking at the city lights and waterfront sights, as a gentle breeze blows by, is most relaxing.

Our thanks to Martin for making a memorable Amsterdam experience possible.

Great boat,Great place to stay. Our 4 year old loved climbing up the steps & locking the hatch when we went out, couldn't ask for more to make a family visit to Amsterdam more exciting (for the adults to).
Location gives easy access on the trams into the city centre.

Thanks again Martin

no hesitation to go again | 8 February 2006
Kendal

We loved the boat.

We wanted something fun for the kids, but also safe, secure and child-proof! Martin's boat offered all of those things. We stayed in the first weekend of February and there was no issue with cold. The kids ran around inside naked half the time and had an absolute ball. Having a full sized bathroom with bath was great for them too.

The location was convenient to shops and trams and it offered great value for money.

I wouldn't hesitate going back again or recommending it to others. Martin couldn't have been more helpful. He never disturbed us, only us him when we set off the smoke alarm by burning bread!

I have stayed in Amsterdam many many times, for both work and pleasure
But I would rank BS16 as the best accomodation I have stayed in there (possibly excepting luxury hotels)
The cost was about the same as a dingy 2 star hotel but the comfort, space and charatcter was great
Heartily recommended

When we saw the outside of the boat, we were a bit worried but the inside was cute and well kempt. We had plenty of room for another couple to join us for a few nights. Crawling down the hatch was an adventure but much more fun than staying in a generic hotel, Our host was helpful but not intrusive. It has a nice central location.

We stayed on Martins boat for 2 nights. It was excellent. The boat was bright, spacious and very homely. Martin was the host and was very helpful for local information. If you needed anything he was obliging. Although Martin lived in the back half of the boat you would never have known, it was very private. Only 20 minutes stroll from the centre of Amsterdam, we just walked everywhere. We have already recommended Martins boat to our friends and family and would definately come back and stay on Martins boat again.

The experience of staying on a barge in Amsterdam made our short break perfect.

What can I say, the houseboat was great! Our host was so friendly and helpful and the boat was lovely. It was the most relaxing experience after a long day of walking in the city to climb down the hatch to our boat, get out of the rain and snuggle in the warmth of the cabin. I would recommend this place to anyone and feel that it made our trip to Amsterdam absolutely unforgettable. We will certainly be back the next time we come into Amsterdam!

My wife and I stayed on Martins houseboat from 31-March until April13th. The house boat is authentic and very cozy. Plenty of room.Martin left us alone. But if we needed anything he was available immediately. The bed was very comfortable, we had a refridgerator, microwave, coffee maker, sink , ironing board and ironr. The bathroom was spacious. We did our laundry on board. We had a telephone,TV and CD/radio and wood stove. The weather was not great but staying on the boat made up for that.It was unique and better than any hotel room. Martin is a nice guy and we would highly reccomend his boat. Once you get use to the Tram system, we could be in the center of town in minutes. We have been to Amsterdam three times and in our experiences, this houseboat was the best place to stay.

great place! | 28 March 2005

the boat was not a very good site from the outside, but the interior is beautiful and matijn is very nice. he lives on the boat as well, but at the other end - so he soesn't mind noise at night, or anything else for that matter.
it is a god 25-30 minute walk from the center of town, but if you rent bikes it is a perfect ride to anywhere....
overall i would suggest staying here to anyone!

Ayala Halevi

We stayed on the boat on February 2005 (A couple and 2 teenagers).
It was certainly a unique way to experience Amsterdam.
We can warmly recommend this boat, which is very worm and cozy and had everything we needed, including very comfortable beds.
It was snowing outside but the boat was warm and it was great to come back to after a long day at the city.
Martin, the owner was very nice and helpful and gave us all the information we need.
We hope to come back in our next visit to Amsterdam…

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay on Martin's houseboat. Although the weather was cold and wet we were very warm and found all the space inside the boat great with our 11 month old baby who loved crawling round to investigate everything. Martin was very helpful yet left us to our own devices too.
It is so nice to stay somewhere with so much character yet all the mod cons, who needs a pokey hotel room when you can have so much space.
We will be back when it is a bit warmer we hope.

Boat BS16, Studio | 2 February 2005

5 friends and I stayed on Boat BS16 for a week over the New Year period. We were concerned that the boat would not be big enough or afford us enough privacey for 3 couples.

When we arrived, however, we were delighted with the boat. It is bigger than it looks in the photographs and is extremley comfortable. We were also very pleased with its location - de Pijp is a fantastic area. It is busy with lots of great bars, shops and coffee shops and only 10 minutes from the centre of the city by tram. We enjoyed staying in this area as it allowed us to see more of the city than we would have if we had stayed in a centrally located hotel. We all felt that we had experienced more of the real Amsterdam.

Martin was a fantastic host. Although we saw little of him, he was very helpful and friendly when we did seek him out for advice. I would thoroughly recommend holidaying on this boat.

My family ( 3 adult Children and wife) spent last Christmas in this houseboat. Martin, the owner could not have been more grecios or helpful.

The accomodations are clean and spacious, and conducive to having a great time. Even though it was winter we were always quite warm.

The boat is close to the center of town, and you can walk everywhere.

We recommend this experience to all

We are a group of Russian scientists visited Amsterdam RAI Exhibition Centre in mid-October 2004. I always prefer to find accomodation through the Internet. So when I was looking for accomodation, I entered in Google "accomodation Amsterdam" and houseboathotel.nl website was one on the top of the search results. The stay at Martin's boat BS16 was wonderful, and the host did a lot of help for us. Especially as we had a lot of cargo, Martin helped us to communicate with local carrier for cargo pick-up. We really used to feel ourselves at BS16 boat like at home. Thank you very much, Martin!!!

My wife and I spent 9 days aboard. Our host Martin was outstanding. The boat inside is just like the pictures. The location makes it very easy to get around the city. We went to the market and bought food and drinks. We enjoyed the spacious and comfortable cabin. Sitting on deck in the afternoon and watching the boats go by is so relaxing. The Turk and Italian restaurant,a 5 min. walk is outstanding.

We arrived in Amsterdam on Monday April the 5th at 22:oo pm. It was raining a lot and when we saw the houseboat We were afraid of what we can find inside. Martin was waiting us and he showed us the apartment. He was very kind and warm and We find the interior extremely cozy, clean and confortable.
Everything worked perfectly: heating, water... and it was very funny how to get in. Martin is a perfect landlord, prudent and disposal at the same time. Everyting seemed to be easy for him.
Every day, after visiting this interesting city, we went to the supermarket and bought something to eat, then we arrived at the boat and we really felt at home.
I recomend this type of acomodation, AND THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR ALL, MARTIN

We had a lovely stay on houseboat B16 and can certainly recommend renting it.
The 'landlord' is a very friendly guy. It's extremely cosy, recently done up and the 5 minute walk into the centre is a pleasant one, we never bothered with renting bycicles...all in all a very successful holiday for us.

Boats are better! | 16 February 2004

My partner and I booked the "Ideaal" (boat BS16) for a citybreak in Amsterdam and were very excited by the prospect of staying on a boat. The reality did not disappoint - staying on a boat really becames a big part of the adventure! The weather was dreadful on our first night, and if we had been stuck in a hotel room we would have been bored and disappointed, but instead we threw a log or two in the wonderful wood-burning stove and settled down for a romantic night in.

The outside of the boat could do with a lick of paint, but never fear as the interior is both attractive and cosy. Those who are worried about feeling a bit sea-sick need not be concerned as the boat didn't rock at all, even during the bad weather. The boat is located quite close to Amstel metro station, so it's pretty handy for the city centre. Grocers, bakers, supermarket and pharmacy are all nearby.

Host Martin lives in the other half of the boat and is very friendly, welcoming and helpful. He was on hand to answer any questions but otherwise left us to enjoy our holiday in peace.

Future visitors - we recommend the Cafe Bloemen! From the boat, cross over the road and turn right, then walk along and turn into the first proper main road on the left. The cafe is on the righthand side. Friendly service, lovely atmospheric surrounds, good food! Wish we had somewhere like that near us at home.

Thanks Martin for a lovely stay - we may well be back!

well, it was really great on that house boat! surely the best way to stay in amsterdam.

the boat is a little outside amsterdam on the river amstel. the distance is no big problem, metro and tram are a few minutes away. when you come to the boat, don't be shocked from the outside view! you'll be surprised by the supberb interiour!
martin elbrug, the owner of the boat who also lives in a part of the boat will welcome you and show you around. he's a very nice guy, completely uncomplicated, helpful and sympatic.
the price is really fair for what you get in studio 16. i really recomend this boat and looking forward to my next stay.

regards,
m

This boat was very good, clean, quiet, well equipped. Close to a pub, coffee shop, but the downtown (red lamp district) is about 1/2-1 hour walk. I recommend it. Martin is cool.

Four of my friends and i recently stayed here and had the most unique accomodation ever. It is very well situated, clean and the host is friendly and professional. Now I cannot understand why anyone would want to stay in a hotel when here the accomodation becomes as big a part of the holiday as the tourist attractions. I will definitely be returning in the future as we had such a great time the first time round.
